Making a Difference with a Drop of Blood

Origin of National Blood Donor Month

National Blood Donor Month is observed in January to honor dedicated donors and raise awareness of the need for blood donations. The government proclaimed January as the first National Blood Donor Month on December 31, 1969, as requested by Senate Joint Resolution 154.

January was designated as National Blood Donor Month as it is one of the most difficult times to collect enough blood to meet patient needs due to the holidays, seasonal illnesses, and bad weather. In January 2022, American Red Cross declared its first-ever national blood crisis given the significantly increased shortage of blood supply due to the pandemic.

Importance of Blood Donation

Every two seconds, U.S. needs a blood transfusion to help patients survive surgeries, cancer treatment, chronic illnesses, and traumatic injuries. In fact, 1 in 7 patients entering a hospital will use blood. There is a constant need for blood donations to help a patient survive. With one blood donation, donors can save multiple patients’ lives.

Everyone, if medically eligible, should help donate blood to provide a lifeline for those in need.

How You Can Donate

Look for a nearby organization that collects blood donations by using donatingblood.org. There are many organizations such as American Red Cross, New York Blood Center, and Vitalant) where you can schedule an appointment in advance to make a blood donation.

Other Ways to Contribute

Some people do not meet the age or medical eligibility, but can still contribute to the cause. You can become a volunteer to work at a blood drive, schedule appointments, and hand out snacks to donors. Another way to help is to host a blood drive at a school or company, and continuously raise awareness to inform and encourage others to donate blood. Monetary donations are also helpful in helping clinics upgrade storage facilities and in providing personal protective equipment.
